Founded by Susan Vorhis in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1998, Creative Montessori School is a small, non-profit Montessori preschool and kindergarten serving children ages 3-6. Our experienced teachers — all Montessori-credentialed — provide a high-quality Montessori education in a warm, nurturing environment. Our one-classroom setting fosters close relationships with children and their families, while hands-on Montessori materials and thoughtful guidance encourage children to develop independence, curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning — all with an added focus on fun and creativity.

Dr. Maria Montessori developed a method of education in the early 1900s that was based on her scientific observations of how children learn. She designed a materials-rich environment and allowed children to follow their own interests as they explored it. Teachers well-trained in observation and child development guide the children through the curriculum, sparking interest and providing help when needed. The goal is for children to become independent learners, accepting responsibility and earning respect.
Montessori education is designed around a three-year developmental cycle in which children grow from explorers to experimenters to experts. Beginning at age three gives children time to become familiar with the classroom, develop independence and concentration, build social skills, and ultimately take on leadership and greater responsibility for their learning. While children benefit from attending for any length of time, completing the full three-year cycle allows them to experience the full progression of Montessori’s carefully prepared environment and developmental curriculum.
“The Montessori approach gave my boys so much more than just an introduction into education; it gave them the freedom to learn at their own pace, develop independence, build confidence, and truly grow into themselves.”
